National Disability Insurance Scheme

WHAT IS THE NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is an independent statutory agency. Our role is to implement the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which will support a better life for hundreds of thousands of Australians with a significant and permanent disability and their families and carers.

  • National - The NDIS is being introduced progressively across all states and territories.

  • Disability - The NDIS provides support to eligible people with intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive, and psychosocial disability. Early intervention supports can also be provided for eligible people with disability or children with developmental delay.

  • Insurance - The NDIS gives all Australians peace of mind if they, their child or loved one is born with or acquires a permanent and significant disability, they will get the support they need.

  • Scheme - The NDIS is not a welfare system. The NDIS is designed to help people get the support they need so their skills and independence improve over time.

What qualifies for NDIS?

To be eligible for NDIS funding, the disease or medical condition must cause permanent impairment (physical, intellectual, cognitive, neurological, visual, hearing or psychosocial), resulting in significant disability.
Children under seven years do not need a diagnosis to get early intervention support from the NDIS. The first step is to call the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) on 1800 800 110. ... connect you and your child with supports in your area, like community health services, playgroups or peer support groups.

What is NDIS Plan Management?

If you have an NDIS plan, there are several ways you can choose to manage your finances:

  • Self Managed - This involves the participant having full responsibility including doing the administration, paying for appointments, keeping invoices & receipts, and purchasing support themselves.

  • Agency Managed - When your plan is managed by the NDIA, they will manage your funding and bookkeeping. As a result, this means you will not need to pay for anything or keep any records. However, when you use the NDIA you are required to use only NDIS registered providers.

  • Plan Managed - Like a self-managed account, Plan Management provides you with the flexibility to choose your own service providers. As a result, this means your service providers do not have to be NDIS registered. When you choose NDIS Plan Management Melbourne, your Plan Manager will take care of all the finances and administration such as paying providers and tracking your spending, so you can spend more time enjoying the services.  You will also receive a monthly report of Plan amount unutilised.

How can a Support Coordinator help me?

A Support Coordinator will support you to understand and implement the funded supports in your plan and link you to community, mainstream and other government services. A Support Coordinator will focus on supporting you to build skills and direct your life as well as connect you to providers.

Your Support Coordinator will assist you to negotiate with providers about what they will offer you and how much it will cost out of your plan. Support coordinators will ensure service agreements and service bookings are completed. They will help build your ability to exercise choice and control, to coordinate supports and access your local community.

They can also assist you in planning ahead to prepare for your NDIS plan review and accessing extra funding (If need be).
Support coordinators will assist you to 'optimise' your plan ensuring that you are getting the most out of your funded supports.

There are three levels of support coordination that can be included in your plan:

  1. Support Connection – This support is to build your ability to connect with informal, community and funded supports enabling you to get the most out of your plan and pursue your goals.

  2. Support Coordination – coordination of supports: This support will assist you to build the skills you need to understand, implement, and use your plan. A support coordinator will work with you to ensure a mix of supports are used to increase your capacity to maintain relationships, manage service delivery tasks, live more independently, and be included in your community.

  3. Specialist Support Coordination –This is a higher level of support coordination. It is for people whose situations are more complex and who need specialist support. A specialist Support Coordinator will assist you to manage challenges in your support environment and ensuring consistent delivery of service.

Depending on your individual goals, plan objectives and aspirations you may receive funding for these supports in your plan.
