Positive Behaviour Intention Support and ABA

PBIS

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based three-tiered framework to improve and integrate all of the data, systems, and practices affecting a child’s outcomes every day in their daily life. At BrainAbility, positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) is a comprehensive approach that we use to promote child’s learning and positive behavior in a steady way. With PBIS, we teach kids about behavior expectations and strategies. The focus of PBIS is prevention, not punishment.

PBIS has several important guiding principles:

  • Children can learn behavior expectations for different situations.

  • We endeavor to teach expected behaviors through explicit instruction, with opportunities for a child to practice behavior and get feedback. Stepping in early can prevent more serious behavior problems.

  • Each child on Spectrum is different, so parents & educators need to give many kinds of behavior support.

  • How to teach behavior should be based on research and science. Tracking a child’s behavior progress is important.

  • We gather and use data from both home and school (if required) to make decisions about behavior interventions.

Behavior in a person is a form of communication which means the child might be craving attention or trying to express a need or feeling. PBIS doesn’t ignore problem behavior rather we encourage parents to use discipline in a positive way, but punishment isn’t the focus. Instead, the focus is on setting expectations and making the child to understand them thus preventing problems and using logical consequences.

ABA

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), also called behavioral engineering is a scientific technique concerned with applying empirical approaches based upon the principles of respondent and operant conditioning to change the behavior of social significance.

Behavior analysis helps us to understand:

  • How behavior works or happens

  • How behavior is affected by the the environment at both home & school

  • How learning takes place in a child

ABA therapy applies our understanding of how behavior works to real situations. The goal is to increase behaviors that are helpful and decrease behaviors that are harmful or affect learning.

ABA therapy programs can help:

  • To increase language and communication skills

  • To improve attention, focus, social skills, memory, and academics

  • To decrease problem behaviors

Applied Behavior Analysis involves many techniques for understanding and changing behavior. ABA is a flexible therapeutic approach:

  • It can be adapted to meet the needs of each unique person

  • It can be provided in diverse locations – at home, at school, and in the community

  • It teaches skills that are useful in everyday life

  • It can involve one-to-one teaching or group instruction

  • Includes Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is one of the main strategies used in ABA.

When a behavior is followed by something that is valued (a reward), a person is more likely to repeat that behavior. Over time, this encourages positive behavior change.
